Drawing Program Curriculum

Our core drawing program is progressive, encouraging continual development of creative skills.

Art Start 3-4 year olds

Art is an important part of your child's early childhood education, regardless of whether you think he will grow up to be another Picasso. Children are active learners, and making art is a hands-on activity that expands imaginations and exercises creativity. It also develops small motor control and eye/hand coordination, and sharpens children's powers of observation. Our Art Start program is designed as the building blocks for your child's life-long learning path.

Children learn the fundamentals of art - color, line, shape, form and texture - by painting and drawing, making collages and fashioning three-dimensional objects out of modeling material. Three and four year olds recognize patterns, learn about colors, gain an understanding of composition, balance, and symmetry and learn how to work independently as well as how to function as part of group.

Beginners 5-6 year olds

This class for introducing various drawing skills for 5 to 6 year olds. Learning how to properly use materials, and follow general studio procedures. By teaching young children how to use and control materials properly and safely they develop habits that are carried forward. Projects at this level are designed to demonstrate to children how to organize the process of drawing and improve their results. We emphasize planning, sequencing, problem solving, and staying on task. This slightly more structured approach at this early stage is important and results in dramatic grow in their drawings. We support and encourage children to express their personal creative instincts as part of their artwork. Regardless of the artist's age, their growth is a result of the skills and techniques they've mastered combined with their creativity and desire to express it.

Basic Drawing 7-8 year olds

Basic Drawing introduces students to a structured drawing process which includes learning how to "see to draw," plan and follow through. The class projects are designed to guide students toward developing drawing skills while encouraging personal expression and creativity. While many of the projects are guided, each student is allowed and encouraged to work with his or her own vision and produce a unique finished piece.

Basic Drawing classes are intended for students who are either: moving up from Beginners; or 7 through 8 years old and new to drawing classes; or older and less confident in their skills.

Intermediate Drawing 9-11 year olds

Intermediate drawing offers a continuing focus on visual training, planning and process. These older students seek both naturalistic realism and an opportunity for creative expression. Class projects develop visual perception and drawing skills while exposing students to a wide variety of techniques and media. Subject matter may include: animals, landscape, still life, the human form, as well as various artists and art periods. Students will be encouraged to develop their own style and creative approach.

Advanced Drawing 12+ year olds

A class for students who have achieved the skill level of working independently on projects, rarely needing a step by step demonstration by the teacher. Geared for the student who has mastered the basic skills in line, shape, proportion, perspective, and the ability to create volume through light logic, using 3 dimensional objects. Can stay focused and concentrated for a 2 hour class and is confident enough to explore various subject matter and live models with comfort. Prerequisite: Drawing Fundamentals.

Teen Portfolio 13+ year olds

This class is will prepare students for college acceptance and their required portfolio. Work with a variety of mediums and discuss your work with fellow students and instructor. Students must be at an appropriate skill and age level for this course. 2 hours and a portfolio case is required of all students.

Beginning Drawing for Adults adults

Since drawing has not been widely taught in the U.S. since the 1800's most adults today have never received any drawing instruction whatsoever. As a result, many adults feel they've missed out on something, and they want a second chance. The good news is, it's never too late. Even though you may feel yourself to be a complete beginner, your life- experiences and observations have helped you develop visual skills and creative instincts that children cannot yet have. To a child, who is a true beginner, everything is new. Adults however, have far more sophisticated mental processes and are typically capable of working at the Intermediate level. That may sound intimidating, but if you can write your name in script, color inside the lines and predict what color will be produced when you mix red and blue together, you're no beginner!
